Thank you for helping improve safety for wheelchair users in your community.

How to Distribute a Flag:

1. Introduce Yourself

"Hi, I'm a volunteer with American Wheelchair Safety Flags. We provide free safety flags to help wheelchair users be more visible."

2. Offer the Flag – and stay safe!

  • Explain it's free and easy to use.

  • Respect their decision if they decline.

  • Stay Safe Suggestions:

    • Park legally before stopping.

    • Only approach people in a safe location.

    • Never enter traffic.

3. Install It

  • Help attach the flag if requested.

  • Show how to raise, lower, and remove it.

4. Ask for a Photo to post on social media with #BeSeenBeSafe

With permission, take a photo to help AWSF share its impact.

5. Complete Story:

  • Recipient's name (first name only for safety reasons)

  • Wheelchair user’s safety concerns or experiences

  • Photo (if provided)

Optional: Ask the flag recipient if you can record a short testimonial about their experiences navigating public spaces and trying to stay safe. Always obtain a signed Media Consent Form.

Volunteer Checklist:

  • Register

  • Read the guidelines

  • Watch the training video

  • Sign the Volunteer Agreement

  • Complete the background check

  • Receive your certificate

  • Distribute flags

  • Submit your email with photo of wheelchair user and flag.

Background Screening:

For the safety of our community, volunteers who distribute flags in public complete a background check through our secure third-party provider. AWSF only receives the final screening result.
